Cold air and heating
Melanin-rich skin has fewer ceramides in its top layer and loses moisture faster all year. Add a cold walk and a heated office and you are ashy by lunchtime.

Cold air, hard water and central heating take moisture from melanin-rich skin faster than anywhere you have lived. Nubiessence is a seven-product body ritual for Brown, Black and African women in the UK — to put it back, keep skin calm, and keep your tone even through every season.

Why your skin reacts here
Three things happen at once in a first British winter, and no routine on the high street is built for them.
Melanin-rich skin has fewer ceramides in its top layer and loses moisture faster all year. Add a cold walk and a heated office and you are ashy by lunchtime.
London’s water is very hard. Its calcium and magnesium leave wash residue on skin and raise its pH, which weakens the barrier. Skin that grew up in soft water feels it first.
When darker skin is irritated it makes more pigment. A spot, a scratch or a dry patch can leave a mark for months. Keeping skin calm is how you stop new ones starting.
So the order matters: restore moisture, keep the barrier calm, then even the look of tone. That is what the ritual does.
The Nubiessence ritual
A routine built for this climate, not adapted to it — with a winter and a summer version of the step that matters most.
Revitalizing Body Wash daily; African Black Soap two or three times a week. Both rinse clean in hard water.
Exfoliating Body Scrub two or three times a week — sugar and mandelic acid, gentle enough not to leave marks.
Rich Body Butter on damp skin from October to March; Eden Glow Body Lotion the rest of the year. Advanced Brightening Lotion on the places that mark.
Radiance Body Oil — over butter in winter, alone in summer. The antioxidant step that keeps tone even.
Seal within three minutes of the shower. The heating and the hard water do their damage in that window.
The collection
Each product leads on one thing your skin needs here — rejuvenation, moisture, an even look to your tone, or keeping it that way. Together they are the routine.
Made for the move
Black soap, shea, turmeric, baobab — what our mothers used, formulated to be consistent, safe and labelled for the UK, and built around what this climate does to melanin-rich skin.
We started with the body. It is where the ashiness, the marks on knees and elbows and the winter dryness show first. Face care, and a sunscreen with no white cast, are next.
